Productions in Shakespeare's Day
Shakespeare never published any of his plays, so none of his orginal manuscripts survived. In 1623 is when a collection of his works appeared, which is 7 years after he died. The play Romeo and Juliet was produced in Verona and Mantua, Italy, and is known as a tragedy. Romeo and Juliet was based on two lovers that died for each other in 1303. In the ampitheaters there were smoke effects, firing of a cannon, fireworks, and flying entrances at the top of the theater known as the heavens, along with music at the Globe theater. The actors did not have time for rehersal because it was important to act out new plays, they usually got there lines during the play. No women were aloud in the theater, they used young boys instead. If you wanted to see a play at this time the price ranged form one penny at the Globe Theater to the cheapest being two pennies at the Playhouses.
